Episode #138 Features a Rare Triple Play with Major League Baseball Hall of Fame Pitcher, Jim Kaat, Barbecue News Magazine Publisher, Kell Phelps, and Podcaster, Gary Mack
Jim Kaat writes in his new autobiography, Good As Gold:  My Eight Decades In Baseball,  “I am one of the few people alive who can truly say that virtually every dollar I have earned as an adult has been because of my involvement in the game of baseball, a game I have loved since 1945 when I was about seven years old.”  The eight decades Jim writes about are filled with incredible stories of the many people he has been associated with in his 25 years as a player, his time as a pitching coach, and his many years as a broadcaster.  One such story is how Jim had the chance to be a “bonus baby” but his father knew best and helped Jim make a difficult decision that positively shaped his future.  Jim was a left-handed pitcher for the Washington Senators / Minnesota Twins, Chicago White Sox, Philadelphia Phillies, New York Yankees, and St. Louis Cardinals.  He was a three-time All-Star and a Gold Glove winner for 16 seasons in a row.  He was Pete Rose’s chosen pitching coach when Rose became the Cincinnati Reds manager.  Following coaching, he took up residence in various baseball broadcast booths, where he honed his craft and became a multi-Emmy-winning broadcaster.  His career, which is far from over, is culminating with his long-overdue election into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

Kell Phelps is the publisher of the Barbecue News Magazine and recently acquired the National Barbecue Association (NBBQA).  Kell is someone we should have had on the show a long time ago, and what better way to begin the conversation with an apology for waiting this long to have him on.  It was definitely worth the wait as we discuss his significant role in the barbecue industry.  Have questions on what the NBBQA is and how it might help you?  Kell answers that.  Kell talks all about the wonderful things which being a part of the barbecue community offers.  If you have an interest in barbecue in any form, then you need to subscribe to Barbecue News Magazine.  Kell is an avid Atlanta Braves fan, and we discuss both baseball and barbecue.
Gary Mack is the long-time host of the Mets Musings podcast, as well as co-hosting The Baseball Talk Radio Show with Rich Baxter.  He knows baseball very well and like any true baseball fan he is not without his opinions.  The All-Star game is coming up and fan voting has begun.  Join us for a lively discussion on our ballots.
We recommend you go to BBQ Buddha, https://bbqbuddha.com/ for rubs and award-winning sauces https://baseballbbq.com for special grilling tools and accessories, and the Pandemic Baseball Book Club, https://www.pbbclub.com  to find many of the wonderful books we have featured as well as some additional swag, and Magnechef https://magnechef.com/ for excellent and unique barbecue gloves.
We conclude the show with the song, “Baseball Always Brings You Home” by the musician, Dave Dresser, and the poet, Shel Krakofsky.
We truly appreciate our listeners and hope that all of you are staying safe.
